Bsc medical imaging technology And BSc medical imaging technology admission

Duration : 3 years
Eligibility : 10+2 ( Physics Chemistry & Biology )
Type : Degree

Medical Imaging is a discipline related to the study of various methods of capturing images of human body parts for research as well as medical purposes. BSc Medical Imaging Technology is a 3-year undergraduate course designed with a diversified curriculum of study in healthcare management, advanced imaging ( CT and MRI), and advanced knowledge in theories related to Medical imaging technology. Generally, the teaching approach involves practical training, classroom lectures, laboratory work and hands-on training. Bsc medical imaging technology admissions require basic eligibility of completion of 10+2 level of education. Most of the colleges offer a compulsory 1-year internship along with the 3-year course. Upon course, completion students acquire a broad knowledge in Medical Imaging which will help them launch a prospect career along with an opportunity to develop important practical skills in the functioning of Radiology department. There are different types of medical imaging techniques of which the most practised ones are radiology and sonography. Both of these techniques require skilled professionals to operate and monitor the equipment, and both are integral for patient care. To pursue a career as a medical imaging technician most states in India require the candidates to acquire certifications and licence along with graduation in Medical Imaging Technology from an accredited university.

Medical imaging consists of several different branches of imaging like Computed tomography (CT), X-ray imaging, Nuclear medicine and molecular imaging, Mammography, Ultrasound imaging, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy and Radiography. People with medical imaging degree can work in a medical setting as a technician, technologist, nursing assistant or nurse. The responsibilities and duties of a Medical Imaging Technician include:

  • Preparing patients for medical imaging procedures
  • Monitoring and maintaining imaging equipment
  • Operating equipment to get diagnostic images
  • Proper analysis to distinguish between normal and an abnormal image
  • Analyzing images for collecting preliminary data
  • Sharing the data from medical imaging with the physician
  • Maintaining and managing patients’ imaging records

The Curriculum for BSc Medical Imaging Technology includes concepts like radiographic techniques, CT and Ultrasound imaging, MRI imaging and Digital radiology, Nuclear medicine and Mammography. The eligibility criteria and details of admission procedures for BSc medical imaging technology admission are mentioned below:

  • Candidates should have qualified 10+2 from a recognized Board of education with a minimum aggregate score of 45%.
  • Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as main subjects in higher secondary level with the aggregate score, not less than 45%.
  • The candidates are shortlisted for admission based on their performance in 10+2 and the entrance test conducted by the institute (not a compulsory procedure for all institutions), followed by a final round of counselling.
  • The average course fees for the course ranges from INR 2 lakhs to 5 lakhs.

Medical imaging courses –SCOPE

After successfully completing a Bsc medical imaging technology course, interested candidates can opt for higher studies in this discipline like MSc, M.Phil or PhD to be eligible to pursue academic careers as lecturers or professors in government or private institutions. Successful graduates can handle and execute assignments in hospitals, diagnostic centres, healthcare institutions, and research laboratories. Some of the popularly opted career options by graduates in medical imaging technology are Radiographer(Annual pay-INR 2-3 Lacs), X-Ray Technician(annual basic salary- INR 1-2 Lacs), Ultrasound Technician(Annual basic pay-INR 3-5 Lacs), Medical Image Analysis Scientist(Annual basic pay- INR 4-5 Lacs) and Radiologic Technologist(Annual basic pay-INR 4-6 Lacs).
